The department trains bachelors and masters. 

Head: Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Mykhailyuk.

The department has 5 employees. The department is actively engaged in research work, participates in national and international scientific conferences, publishes educational and scientific literature, and its teachers publish their works in leading national and foreign publications.

The department has prepared 12 graduates of specialists in document management and information activities.

In 2003, the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine was the first in the Dnipropetrovs'k region to start training bachelors in the specialty “Documentation and Information Activity”. The Department of History and Documentation (Headed by Associate Professor V.T. Brytan) started training bachelors. In 2008, the Department of Documentation and Information Activity was established as an independent unit. In 2014, the Department successfully passed the accreditation for the preparation of the educational qualification level “Master”.

The department is headed by Doctor of Science, Professor O.V. Mykhailyuk. The department currently includes Candidate of History, Associate Professor S.V. Savchenko, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor K.A. Prokofieva, Candidate of Pedagogy, Associate Professor O.M. Reshetilova, Associate Professor O.V. Ivashchenko, Senior Lecturer. O.V.Ivashchenko, senior researcher. N.V.Tverdokhlib.

Students of documentary studies have internships in the executive committee of the city council, in the regional state administration, other state and local government bodies, in institutions and enterprises of the city and region.

The Department of Documentation and Information Activity of the Dnipro Metallurgical Institute (DMI) closely cooperates with the Dnipro Transport and Economic College and the Pavlohrad Technical College of the National Mining University, which train junior specialists in the field of record keeping. The majority of graduates of these colleges, as a rule, continue their studies at the School of Management.

The research work of the Department is focused on the following issues: historical, hermeneutical and semiotic aspects of documentary information activity, historical and cultural aspects of society development, topical issues of modern historical documentary and source studies. These scientific problems are covered in the publications of the Department's faculty. Teachers of the Department regularly participate in international, national and regional scientific conferences. The research activities conducted at the department are closely related to the creative interests of students. Documentation students participate in conferences, competitions and contests of various levels. Students have repeatedly won prizes in the second round of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Documentation and Information Activities.
